Project overview
Overview
Over two years, teams from Isaac Construction and Liddell Contracting applied their talents to support the Dunedin City Council and their engineer WSP to deliver the Malvern Street sewer replacement project.

Project challenges
The Malvern Street site is in the waters of the Leith floodway, which can run from a trickle to 70 cubic metres of water per second in the space of four hours. Access into the riverbed is constrained and the areas to stage the works were limited. The site also has high and low voltage power and fibre cables suspended overhead, and a bridge that sits partially over the sewer alignment. Making the work more complex, one of the high-capacity fibre links that supports Dunedin is attached to the bridge. There were also challenging ground conditions.
The power of collaboration
Together with DCC and WSP, who acknowledged our concerns, we brought in Liddell expertise and were able to find a way to manage these risks and achieve the best outcomes for the waterway and residents. The project culminated with being awarded the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPEWA) National Excellence in Water Project for 2022, the first IPEWA award for our group.
